I'm conflicted about that.  On the one hand:  More vocoder!, but on the other hand:  More vocoder.

when Dan broke the news to a friend of mine that they were coming back, he reportedly said, and I quote, "yeah, but no more of this Weezer rip off shit. If we're coming back, we're gonna come back for a reason." (or something like that).

From where my friend and I tried to argue that i never really considered their sound to be a =W= ripoff...but that didn't really work.

Whether or not they were actually a Weezer rip off is highly debatable, but the fact remains that Ozma pretty much lived uncomfortably in Weezer's shadow for much of their career.  It's not suprising that they would want to establish themselves outside of that.  Not that I think they have too much of a choice anyway, their natural evolution has carried them quite a ways from where they started anyway (vocal stylings alone now set them apart from Weezer dramatically).

Whoa. I must be out of the loop, because I was under the impression this was a dumb argument to begin with and that it died long ago...? With like, plastic pants and KoRn t-shirts.

Well, regarding Weezer's more recent work..doesn't seem too hard to top them, at least with Ozma.

Hey, I didn't say otherwise.  You can debate over any number of things, but that doesn't mean it's always productive or purposeful.

I think one of the tougher things for me as a big fan of a band is accepting their inevitable changes in sound.  I fell in love with Ozma circa RRP3 era, and years later, I just have to let them break up, reunite, and go in whatever direction they wish.  Its a bummer they can't be the characters in my head: the NES site, Weezer-esque romantics I envisioned in someone's parents house in Pasedena.  But they're real people, who are getting old, trying out NY, doing other things, and now, doing Ozma again.  Oh, lost!

Amazingly enough, here in Utah, it seems every time I go to a show I'll spot someone with an Ozma tee shirt. I always make sure to stop them and award them many cool points.

i don't think they change their sound. maybe a little but every band grows with new albums... and this song is just awsome  youtube.com/watch?v=T6kFBv21n5Q&search=ozma
hope they'll release it as demo soon.

Have you heard some of the new stuff they've posted/stuff Ryen&Kenn posted/etc etc?  Their sound has always been progressing, and it would depress me if they always played thesamesamesame.  It doesn't show innovation, creativity or passion.

Those are three words I've long associated with them :)

Yeah, that sketch was funny for half of the first time I saw it.  Though I will grant that it may have been better had it been about vocoder.

does he use a vocoder for his voice in "light years will burn"
Title: Re: is ozma going to stick with the same sound?
Post by: Nordel on July 27, 2006, 01:03:53 PM
no. he uses an effect called reverse reverberation. you run the track backwards, put some reverb on it, and then when you put it back forward, you have reverb that starts in front of your voice instead of behind it.
